On September 6, 2024, Friday, something tragic happened in Joppatowne High School, resulting in the demise of a 15-year-old student named Warren Grant.

Warren Grant, a resident of the Edgewood community in Harford County and a suspect who is a fellow high schoolmate, was involved in a dispute in the first-floor men’s bathroom at Joppatowne High School.

According to sources, a 16-year-old suspect used a weapon at Warren Grant, injuring him severely. When others at the school heard the shot, they immediately rushed towards Warren, and the school nurses attended him.

However, in a severe condition, school authorities airlifted Warren to the trauma center in Baltimore. Upon reaching the trauma center, he took his last breath and left the world, according to Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler.

According to reports, the suspect, attending his first day of classes at the school, escaped, but police later found and took him under the law from his residence area.

Community members came together for prayers in memory of victim Warren

Hours after authorities reported 15-year-old Warren Grant’s demise, neighbors, religious leaders, and other community members came together at the school for prayers. It held two candles with a note underneath that read, ‘Rest peacefully, Warren, at a concrete anchor in front of the school.’

According to Wmar2news Baltimore, Daniel Mele, Senior Pastor at Towne Baptist Church, said, “It’s just been a sad day.”

Daniel further added, “Very traumatizing. They’ve been texting our youth director and just giving updates. Horrified, shocked, saddened.”

Likewise, Mike Nolan, founder of Harford County-based Breathe 379 and Joppatowne High School alumni said,Praying for the community, and the rest of the kids and teachers. Not only here, but everywhere.”

Just wanted to be a community and come together. It’s not a good time, not a good way to come together. But sometimes this is what draws folks together, as unfortunate as that is, but it’s important to know that we’re here together,” Mike added.

Additional Information

  • Sheriff Jeff Gahler mentioned that current legislation prevents the Harford County Sheriff’s Office from questioning the suspect. However, the State’s Attorney has confirmed the suspect will be charged with the shooting.
  • The family of 15-year-old victim Warren Grant was just notified within the last half hour at the hospital, as per Sheriff Gahler.
  • Authorities were at the school within two minutes of the incident, and more than 100 officers, including Maryland State Police troopers and police from Baltimore County, came to campus within 15 minutes.
